Back and As Much As Ever

I'm not doing well. I didn't go to work today. Although, to be fair, I was worried about my cat since he puked something nasty on my pillow and I thought he might have an intestinal blockage. Now I'm watching him to see if he poops and he has not, all day.

Luckily, my homework got postponed, so I don't need to do it in the next hour.

I have been a mess. Not going to class, not turning in assignments, getting to work later and later. Sleeping all day, all I want to do is watch Golden Girls, eat Reese's eggs, and lay in bed with my cats. I want to get better. I've made some strides; I've gotten a new therapist - I see her online, which is a new thing for me but probably good. I cleaned a little the past few days.

I keep resolving to get out of bed, do my homework, get to work on time, and get things in order. But, I just let the days pass by.

My therapist told me to make a list of the negative thoughts I have and write positive ones so I can counter them. However, I HAVE A LOT OF NEGATIVE THOUGHTS. It's practically constant, except when I'm watching TV, which is why I'm addicted.

She told me to say 'Stop' out loud when I have a negative thought, but once I do that, sometimes I just go on to think other negative thoughts, especially when I'm on a roll. I'm an old hand at this by now and I know that there are no easy fixes and changing the way you think is incredibly difficult. So why am I suddenly expecting this technique to work immediately? Who the fuck knows.

Anyway, I'm writing this because I was searching online for answers, something to tell me step-by-step what to do to get out of this funk and doing a hobby you used to enjoy/express yourself creatively was one of the steps. Yes, amazingly, I did find a step by step thing. Who knows if it will work but I'm giving it a shot because I looked for advice and I found it so I might as well follow it.

Maybe I should make that list of  negative thoughts. She said I only needed a few to start with, so it doesn't need to be comprehensive.

  1. My father thinks I'm a failure.
There are unlimited iterations of this in my brain.

  1. My father thinks I should have gone to a different college
  2. my father thinks my degree makes me basically unemployable

I am getting chest pains already.

     2. I'm not good enough to get into OT school
     3. I'll never be a good enough student for a master's degree
     4. I'll never get my stats grade up enough to look good for my application
     5. I won't be able to manage three classes next semester

Tell me how to counter these? They seem carved in stone.

I hate this, I hate myself, I hate you.
SCREW YOU!!!!!!!!!!

I'm gonna watch more Golden Girls.

I did take new pictures in Florida a few weeks ago.

My TV addiction

Let's talk about how boring writing is and how much I've needed noise in my life since college.

So, lately my obsession has been watching vlogbrothers videos on youtube. John Green is a novelist who writes YA books like Paper Towns, which I just read on vacation. I discovered John's videos before reading his books and I think the main reason for my obsession is just that he is very mature while also being very silly. He is smart but humble and the one picture that caused me to look him up from the start was this;

As a person who has been struggling with questions of the dating realm for a few years now (and probably should have struggled a bit more with those questions earlier in life) this really struck home for me. Suddenly I thought, well... this guy exists and has this awesome opinion so maybe men aren't all bad. I know, I don't ever want to come across as the 'Feminazi' but if you read my previous blog posts you have to admit I've had it pretty rough lately and I've only written about a fraction of it, you guys.

Hopefully he's not a unicorn.

Dating sucks ass, you guys, but I'm not really wanting to talk about that right now.

The point is that John Green and his brother are awesome, smart, and compassionate, and they are just the sort of people that I am looking to try and surround myself with. AND it turns out they actually have a whole community of fans called nerdfighters that maybe I can get involved with. I haven't seen anything IRL as of yet, but I will be keeping an eye out.

ANYWAY, the thing I actually wanted to talk a bit about was how I was watching one of John Green's video's today and he was talking about how boring writing is and how reading is not really conducive to our multi-tasking, immediate-update culture. That made me think about how since college, I have needed noise in my life. I've just needed to have some kind of TV show running basically at all times because when I don't, I start to think too much and get into depressive thought cycles. College was one of the more difficult times of my life because of how depressed I was and how early on I was into my diagnosis and treatment. I have done so much work since then on my thought processes;

Meta-cognition; thinking about thinking, and then changing how you think, is incredibly difficult.

Anyway, when I was so sick with depression, TV was a fantastic balm. Books didn't work because my anxiety level was so high for a year I physically could not read any more. But I could lose myself in television. My boyfriend (this is the Jack from my earliest posts) thought it was pretty sick: a Fahrenheit 451 level of distasteful. But, when you have cancer, don't they shoot poison into your veins? Most people don't understand just how bad my illness got.

I'm not at that level of depression anymore but I still watch TV like it's my job. I feel a little uncomfortable without it being on. Maybe it was my methadone? But now I'm still addicted to it. And, it impairs my ability to be quiet and to do things that require quiet such as writing. I even do my yoga while watching a TV show (one that isn't yoga). When I was living with my parents I think I sought out quiet more because it was so loud there with my sister and my dad. And, of course, going to high school there was so much noise there.

Maybe I don't really like the quiet as much as I used to think I did and when I moved out on my own  I ended up being a lot more lonely than I have cared to admit. And so, I just like to hear the people talking on the TV even if I'm not really paying attention to the show. Maybe if I balance my life out a little more and have more people in it then I will seek out the quiet again and write and read and play music and do yoga without needing TV.

I am working on my life balance and most of the time I feel so unsatisfied because I am 29 and things are not where I want them to be. But it has been good today to remember where I used to be. I'm glad I'm not there anymore and I have come a long way, I have made progress. But, I probably will continue to watch John Green videos while I finish my laundry because he inspires me. He inspired me to write today. Thanks, John.

Spring and Summer in a Nutshell (TW-suicide)

TRIGGER WARNING: SUICIDAL IDEATION

I haven't been posting much lately; I'm not really good about getting things done or following through on plans. I have a box full of dirty dishes in my dining room and actually it's not the only one.

I didn't go to work today. I actually just looked at the clock, realized I was ridiculously late and I knew I didn't give a shit about going in or even trying to get ready much less booking it to get there on time.

So I called in sick. It's not like I had a lot of work to do anyway and I'm not sure I would care if I did. I think something that was said at work yesterday triggered me. We are trying to improve our processes and there is a woman helping us; we had a meeting with her yesterday and she said she would be meeting with all of us to ask basically which tasks we like about our jobs and which we don't. One of my braver coworkers spoke up in the meeting and said it best, "I come to work, but not to work, because there isn't any work for me to do!"

I'm not sure I like anything about my job. But it's hard for me to look for new ones. I look through positions online but when I see open ones they usually do not excite me. Mostly it looks just like more tiresome bullshit. The ones I do get excited about and apply for, it's really difficult for me to write the cover letters because I get so anxious. But then I don't hear anything back and my self-esteem and motivation take hits that they can't really afford.

I tried to look a little for jobs today, but I couldn't do much. I got a headache and laid back down. There was a bit of sunlight that was very bright shining in my eyes and sunlight triggers my headaches. I think perhaps I am a vampire now. I've worked so long in a basement that I just can't handle being above ground during the day. It's probably a thing.

Anyway; to break down the timeline between my previous postings and now,

In a Nutshell

  • I saw my psychiatrist (hereafter known as Dr. Dead-Inside-and-Mostly-Outside); he was a horrible person. He deserves for me to sue him because he messed up my meds and upset me repeatedly; often yelling at me and all but telling me to shut up when I tried to tell him my symptoms.
  • This spring I was horribly depressed to the point of suicidal ideation. I would come in to work fresh from thinking about walking in front of traffic.
  • I didn't have much of a support system. For various reasons I basically have no one to talk to about this. And because I was becoming desperate and because my coworker (hereafter known as Bitchy McTraitor) and I had started becoming closer friends, I confided in her that I was having a rough time and that I had been recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
  • She said I should tell my manager about my diagnosis but I disagreed. I didn't tell my employer about my diagnosis because I was afraid of giving them another reason to fire me. I know it's illegal, but they almost fired me before for a workplace injury that happened there so why not depression? They're shady, horrible people, and they proved it with all the shit that happened before with my injury. I have never trusted my manager and I told Bitchy McTraitor that.
  • Bitchy McTraitor was initially sympathetic but soon distanced herself from me, and then began talking about me behind my back to other coworkers and complained about me to management. Apparently, she told management she was 'concerned about me,' but the stuff I've heard that she told other people does not support that at all. Mostly I think she was upset because I wasn't getting work done right away and she has always been one to look over my shoulder. But she should have also noticed me crying next to her at work most days. She is a heartless bitch. I mean, what kind of person sees a person, presumably a friend, who is in real trouble and says, 'man, look how this is affecting me? Look how much my workload has slightly increased because there's obviously a serious problem going on in my coworker's life. Instead of saying anything to this friend of mine and seeing if I can help her in any way, maybe I should go to management who have shown in the past that they have zero actual investment in the happiness of their employees and see how that works out.'
  • This complaint led to me being written up for creating a 'hostile working environment,' and other work mistakes that were a bit shady and left mostly unexplained. I was given a week to 'improve the situation' or be terminated.
  • By this time I had left Dr. Dead-Inside-and-Mostly-Outside's practice and found someone new (an NP we'll call NP Flowers) who had straightened out my meds and explained (as much as I could understand) why Dr. Dead-Inside-and-Mostly-Outside was obviously an incompetent prick. NP Flowers and I had a bit of a rough start but we're getting along fine now.
  • So; once I got written up I kicked my working mode into high gear, I was mostly on time every day (as good as it gets), I quadruple-checked all my work before it went out, I did all my work right when I got it, and most importantly I scheduled time with my manager to discuss how to deal with Bitchy McTraitor.
  • There's a lot more to this story, a LOT. But bascially, I kicked ass and I took fucking names and one of them is Bitchy McTraitor's. I am now back in my manager's good graces and I cover my ass every time Bitchy McTraitor makes some new bitch move against me, so that my manager can see what a complete bully and horrible person she is. I am friendly to them even though neither of them are in MY good graces.

Maybe I will tell the rest of that story some other time. There are a lot of stories here but I think it's time to admit I'm not good at getting things done and I just want to get some of this hurt written down. Maybe it will help me sleep tonight, I don't know. I'm really considering making cookies. Or going out to buy cookies. I don't know, I feel like I need cookies.

I think I may be on a downward turn again and that is not good. Maybe it was the adrenaline and anxiety keeping me going this summer and now I'm spent. I'm finally getting a new therapist and I have made the appointment for next Friday. Hopefully she can help me get enough confidence and motivation or whatever I need to get the right stuff to finally get out of this job.

Fit & Fabulous: Weight Watchers and the Yoga Challenge

I started Weight Watchers on Monday. While I was staying with my parents to get away from my flooded apartment, I came across this coupon in the mail for a free Weight Watchers meeting with purchase of a monthly pass. I didn't think much of it at first, but it kind of stuck in the back of my mind. I've never done the popular diets; no South Beach, no Atkins, mostly because I think cutting one thing out of your diet is not really the answer. Plus, I know that I would never completely cut out sugar or carbs, and once you start eating those things again, the weight will come back. 95% of diets fail*. Which is why I've tried going the route of lifestyle change.

But lifestyle change has not been working very well for me because I just haven't really succeeded in making enough changes. Last year I lost 10 pounds using my serving size diet and jogging, but since then I've fluctuated within about 4 pounds and just lately coming back up to 171lbs. I had some real success dealing with my binge eating and I cut that down significantly. I have real meals now (whereas at my worst I would have 'cookie dinners').

But I still want more. I can still eat half a dozen donuts in a sitting without blinking an eye and that is actually something I tend to do when I feel low or when I have cravings that I just can't forget about or control. I'm still not great at dieting more than 3 days in a row and exercise has gone down the toilet since it got too cold to swim.

My habits are still not going to get me to my goals of getting back down to a normal BMI, not having my thighs rub together and being able to dress how I want.

So I'm trying something new. I'm not totally sure about their points system, to me it seems needlessly complicated, however i do like that there are 0 pt foods (bananas, mandarin oranges) so even if I hit my point limit for the day hopefully I'll still have something I can munch on if hungry. I like the idea of social dieting; having the weekly meetings and the support of a leader. I haven't gone to any meetings yet, but I've scheduled one for next Wednesday. Hopefully with some regular, positive social support I'll be able to further cut out binge eating and get more motivation for keeping up with exercise.

So keeping this all in mind, I am also restarting my 28 day yoga fitness book^, I've done 3 days so far and I've made this thing on my wall, not sure what you would call it:

Each circle is a day of exercise and it goes through all the 28 days of my yoga book with a cardio session every third day. I'll pull them down every day that I complete one.

More updates on Weight Watchers to come; hopefully it will be what I need to finally reach my goals.

*The Cognitive Behavioral Workbook for Weight Management: A Step-by-Step Program by Michele Laliberte, Randi E. McCabe and Valerie Taylor

^Richard Hittleman's Yoga 28 Day Exercise Plan by Richard Hittleman. Note: if any of you look up this book and read it, YES, I know it's VERY sexist. But it was a gift and it's the book I used to start yoga, it also has a lot of wisdom despite the fact that it was written for 1950's-style housewives.

Fit & Fabulous: The Plan

So I’ve been struggling with how to write this post. I tried doing the whole background spiel but it seems that I have just too much history with food to put it all in one entry. I’ve decided to just dole out my past in little bits whenever it comes up and just try to nutshell it in the first post. So here it is;

I am overweight. I used to be underweight but it was all due to an intense metabolism. Since I could eat whatever I wanted without consequences I developed some really bad food habits and probably binge eating disorder. When I reached mid-twenties the bottom dropped out of my metabolism and my habit of no exercise + binge eating = 70lb weight gain. I got stretch marks.

I’m 5’5’’ and I reached my highest weight of 182lbs last December. Since then, I’ve lost 14.8 of those pounds. Hoorah!! If you think that doesn’t sound impressive go do something awkward with a duck because it’s a huge accomplishment for me. I went from gaining a pound a week to losing something most months. AND I found a form of exercise I actually want to do – swimming.

So here’s what’s happened so far; I bought a book called ‘The Cognitive Behavioral Workbook for Weight Management: A Step-by-Step Program’ and started with its maintenance plan. I did that for about a year, adding in more and more exercise, and then recently switched to the book’s weight-loss plan. I started with maintenance because I had so many food issues and I knew that I’d never lose weight without addressing them first. So I had to learn to maintain before I lost.

Now when I say, ‘I did the maintenance plan for a year,’ please understand that doesn’t mean I stuck to it every day. In fact, I didn’t even stick to it most days. My first goal was to do the plan for 56 days (not even consecutively!) and after starting the plan in late July of last year I reached that goal on June 12 this year!

Since I love numbers, you know I’ve got all the stats! Here they are;

As you can see, I suck at following my plans but I’ve still had some success probably because of exercise (and starting a new anti-depressant in June), and starting the weight-loss diet plan in July.

I’ll go over the main ideas of these two diet plans; you can get the details of both of these diets from the book I mentioned. Maintenance diet first;  I went through the calculations in the book for how many calories you need to eat in a day based on height, weight and amount of exercise. I picked a sedentary amount of exercise at first because the criterion for ‘active’ is exercise about 3-4 times a week and I definitely wasn’t doing that in the beginning. I’m barely doing that now. Then the book gives you a certain amount of servings from each food group that you should eat based on how many calories you need in a day. For me, it was;

Servings
Food Group
Calorie Equivalent per serving
Or
7
Grains
100
1 slice bread
7
Fruits and Vegetables
25
1 whole fruit or veggie
2
Dairy
100
1 cup milk, 1 slice cheese
2.5
Meats
150
Meat the size of a deck of cards
6
Extra Fats
45
1/3 chocolate bar

I kept track of my food and how many servings I ate in a day in a little notebook that I kept with me. I liked this better than keeping track with some app because I’m not sure any of the good ones count by serving size and I don’t have a smart phone so that would just be inconvenient. Counting by serving size is good for me because it’s easier to look at your food and record what you’re eating without having to know exactly how many calories is in it or having to look everything up in some crazy chart. It’s also just an estimate, so I don’t have to stress over exactly how many calories a food has. Counting calories is super stressful for me and just makes me more obsessed with food. Then I eat more just because I’m thinking about food more.

Counting by serving size is so much simpler. I do have to be careful to estimate as accurately as possible, though. So I can’t just count French fries as 1 veggie. Let’s be honest here, once they’re French fries they’re hardly vegetables at all anymore. Medium French fries at McDonalds are 380 calories so that’s the equivalent of 8 ½ fats. A small is 5 fats. This is where it’s nice to know the calorie equivalent of each serving size. When I first started out I needed to look this up for basically everything so I knew that I was estimating accurately. I still look things up but you get a feel for it after a while and I can always write down in my notebook how many servings are in the foods I eat on a regular basis.

So, that’s the maintenance plan. My weight-loss diet looks like this;

Servings
Food Group
Calorie Equivalent per serving
Or
6
Grains
100
1 slice bread
6
Fruits and Vegetables
25
1 whole fruit or veggie
3
Dairy
100
1 cup milk, 1 slice cheese
2
Meats
150
Meat the size of a deck of cards
5
Extra Fats
45
1/3 chocolate bar

Not a big difference but a little harder to keep up with.

Now let’s talk exercise. My ultimate goal is to exercise an hour six days a week. It’s a pretty lofty goal. I’ve broken it down into smaller goals and I have to achieve each one to move on to the next one.

Goal 1: walk for 15 minutes daily plus an hour of yoga once a week. Do this goal 1 week.

Goal 2: An hour of yoga, 30 minutes jogging, and 5 15 minute walks per week. Do this goal 2 weeks.

Goal 3: 1 hour yoga, 2 30 minute jogs and 4 15 minute walks per week. Do this goal for 3 weeks.

Goal 4: 1 hour yoga, 2 30 minute jogs, 2 15 minute sessions of physical therapy stretches, and 2 15 minute walks per week. Do this goal for 4 weeks.

Goal 5: 1 hour yoga, 3 33 minute cardio sessions, and 2 26 minute PT sessions. Do this 5 weeks.

Goal 6: 1 hour yoga, 3 33 minute cardio sessions, and 2 30 minute PT sessions. Do this 6 weeks.

I also decided to get some more exercise in during the day while I’m at work. I have an adjustable desk so I stand for at least an hour in the morning; I’m trying to take the stairs more often and go for a 15 minute walk in the mid-afternoon.

I’m on goal 5 right now. I have 11 goals all working up to the BIG goal of 6 hours/week, but I didn’t want to bore you with all that. You’ll notice at one point I change ‘jogs’ to ‘cardio sessions.’ That’s mostly because I learned jogging is not nearly as fun as swimming and while the outdoor pool at my YMCA is open, I’ll be swimming instead of running. Maybe even after the outdoor pool closes, but I’m not sure about that since the indoor pool hours suck during the colder months (either  5am or 8pm). I’m hoping to replace physical therapy sessions with endurance and then strength training once I’m ready for all that but right now I’m just taking it slow. I’m sure I’m going to talk about my injury in a series of posts later but that’s another one that I’ve been struggling to write. So for now I’ll just leave you with all these hopeful, ambitious plans.
